A rich history
While modern production technology is at the heart of our business today, Fernite has a rich history dating back to 1832.
Originally established as Joseph Fearnehough & Sons Ltd., the business was amalgamated in 1992 with Elsworth Ltd., another long established machine knife company that specialized in the woodworking industry. The name was changed to Fernite of Sheffield (Fernite being the registered trademark), following a management buy-out in 1996, it still a privately owned limited company.
Our stockholding and manufacturing facility has been located in the Darnall area of Sheffield since 1972, prior to that it was located in the vicinity of the Sheffield University but the site was needed for its expansion.
Our four brands are synonymous with quality and precision – and every Fernite Product is manufactured in the United Kingdom – at our ISO9001 certified Sheffield factory.
BSS specializes in the stockholding and processing of cold rolled spring steel, mild (shim) steel and stainless steel strip.
Fernite Machine Knives supply high quality machine knives to some of the world’s leading companies in the packaging, printing, building materials and food industries.
Our A F Whiteley brand granulator blades supply the plastics industry with precision, UK- manufactured granulator blades which combine outstanding performance with long blade life.
PrintBlade doctor blades are used worldwide in Flexographic and Rotogravure printing, ensuring clean and precise ink distribution for an exceptional finish. Offering a range of materials and edge profiles, PrintBlade doctor blades are manufactured in the UK from traceable, high quality European steel.
